In Year 11 Cadets make the choice to join the RAF Section, where they are placed into Proficiency A Flight. Specialist and extensive training is carried out on Thursday afternoons between 1530 hrs and 1645 hrs and also on the two termly Field Days where cadets travel to RAF Aldergrove and take part in training including flights in RAF helicopters, range work on the 100m range and visits to the local units.
In addition to this training, opportunities are available to conduct flight training both in Grob Tutor training aircraft at RAF Woodvale near Liverpool and gliders at Newtownards airfield outside Belfast. All flight training is recorded, and Cadets may wish to apply for a number of scholarships which are available to assist in the obtaining of their private pilots licence. An excellent opportunity achievable with motivation and hard work, and a cadets first solo flight may take place with suitable experience at the age of 17.
